Spare One For the Kids

Date: November 8, 2013 Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Event Description All information can be found at www.Lilliput.org/SpareOne4TheKids.aspx.

The fundraising bowl-a-thon will feature two hours of bowling including shoes, event t-shirt, all you-can-eat pizza and soda, prizes and raffles.  We anticipate that 100 individuals will be in attendance.  100% of the net proceeds of this yearly signature event will support our Sacramento County Kinship Support Services Program (KSSP).

KSSP is the only program of its kind in Sacramento County and supports kin - grandparents and other family members - who are raising their relative children when the birth parents are not able to do so.  The typical kinship family in Sacramento County is a single, African American grandmother in her 50s or 60s raising multiple grandchildren on a fixed, limited income which is at or below the federal poverty level.  Without the supports that we can provide, these families are at great risk of disruption which would result in the children entering or re-entering non-relative foster care.  If separated from their birth family, it is incredibly hard for children to find their way back.  Our expanded kinship services include certifying relative caregivers as well as finding and connecting children with their relatives when first entering foster care.

Founded in 1980, Lilliput is a private, 501(c)3 nonprofit (#94-2614102) whose mission is to ensure a child’s opportunity for permanence in a safe and nurturing family. Throughout California, Lilliput is striving to ensure that when children enter foster care they do not languish there, an all-too-often scenario for foster youth. Lilliput has several core services -- all designed with the purpose of improving the lives of our state’s most vulnerable children by ensuring they are part of a safe, nurturing and committed family. With the goal of prevention and early intervention, Lilliput’s services include kinship services which help children remain within the safety net of extended family when they must be removed from their birth parents due to neglect, abuse or abandonment. Additionally, when family is not available, Lilliput finds families who are able to care for the children for as long as needed, including adoption if reunification with family is not possible.

Lilliput completes over 500 adoptions every year; this is more than any other private nonprofit agency in the whole State.  Over half of each year's adoptions are kin adopting their relative children.
